Este espacio no solo busca reconocer el trabajo excepcional de las mujeres en el cine, sino también inspirar a futuras generaciones de cineastas. Mujeres de Cine promueve la equidad y la diversidad, y recuerda al público la importancia de apoyar y celebrar la creatividad femenina en todas sus formas. Las películas presentadas en esta sección no solo entretienen, sino que también invitan a la reflexión y al diálogo sobre cuestiones relevantes y contemporáneas.

On this 20th anniversary, we highlight the talent and unique vision of the Women in Film. Through this section, the narrative and perspective of these women are celebrated, offering a space for voices that are often underrepresented in the film industry. Each selected work reflects the passion and commitment of its directors to tell authentic and powerful stories.

This space not only seeks to recognize the exceptional work of women in film, but also to inspire future generations of filmmakers. Women in Film promotes equity and diversity; and reminds the public of the importance of supporting and celebrating female creativity in all its forms. The films presented in this section not only entertain, but also invite reflection and dialogue on relevant and contemporary issues.

It is the thirties of the last century, and in the south of Jalisco, emblematic symbols of the state are being consolidated, such as the “charrería” and the “mariachi”. But identities and passions that had previously been hidden are also revealed. Emilia, a young peasant girl, falls madly in love with her cousin, but a sexist society confronts her and forces her to leave and become a mule driver and hide her identity. Travel from the mountains, Mascota, to the sea among hidden trails and lost towns on a journey of self-discovery to try to understand who she really is. A film with subtleties, metaphors and visual magic that lead to the subject of identity and diversity A Jalisco cinema that looks at its own state and from there proposes a universal theme about the contemporary concerns of the queer world and the Mixarika identity. Feminine desire put into action and invite us to reflect and empathize.

Valentina lives in the mountains of Oaxaca in the indigenous Mixteca culture, as the youngest of three children. One day, she learns her father has had an accident while running errands that included buying a doll Valentina asked for. As her community engages in the traditional funeral rituals to honor her father, Valentina enters a stage of denial. The girl’s reaction affects her mother who is processing the death of her partner. What follows is a girl’s journey, slowly coming to grips with the departure of a beloved parent through remembrance and collective support. Valentina remembers her father through handmade comics he drew for her. Through playful camerawork and a witty score Cruz manages to provide the film with a purity that is only comparable to a child’s perspective. The relationship with death is regarded as one of the most peculiar traits across the different cultures inhabiting Mexico, and the film, set in a Mixteca community facing the loss of their indigenous language, offers a refreshing take on death and grief.

Love and Mathematics is a dark, intriguing comedy that is both a funny satire on the suburban life and midlife crisis of a man who was a pop star, but also a thoughtful, sometimes heartbreaking examination of how far someone can reach out to get a sliver of validation in their life. There are images about the annoying family dog, hellish neighborhood dinners, and spouses who simply don’t understand what their partner is going through. All this creates a biting humor that covers the film.  This is a thoughtful and fun examination of this character in search of relevance in his pursuit of his dream as a musician. Driven by brilliant performances and a smart script, the film cuts through suburban life like a biting satire. A current, intimate and sensitive story that subtly balances humor and romance.

“Upon Open Sky”, a road-film set in the 90s in the arid desert region of Coahuila that revolves around two teenage brothers who are determined to avenge the death of their father in a traffic accident. A profound reflection on grief and revenge. They are joined by his new stepsister who, at first unaware of his intentions, then becomes a willing accomplice. As they deliberate what to do with their long-awaited prey, the path they take is an exercise that helps the brothers come to terms with the deep pain of their loss. The celebrated and multi-awarded screenwriter and writer Guillermo Arriaga, father of the directors and Oscar nominee (Amores Perro/Babel) wrote the story based on his experience of an accident he suffered and gave it to his children to direct. A film about looking back and experiencing the tension, sadness and catharsis of adolescents from an essential journey on the path of adulthood.
