El rey de todo el mundo

The king of all the world

México/España/Ficción/2021/95 min

Director: Carlos Saura

Manuel, a famous stage director who has been away from the stage for a while, decides to return with a play full of passion. For him, this production also represents the hope of reconciliation with Sara, his ex-wife, renowned choreographer, (Ana de la Reguera in a stellar performance) to whom he asks for her help. Together they will look for young dancers, creating complicity with them and leading their own life, full of pain and anger, beyond the rehearsal room. The film is a portentous game of transparencies and shadows, images reflected in mirrors and the masterful lighting of the magician of light Vittorio Storano that transcends from the real to the unreal. He continually flee from the obvious to always lead us towards the unexpected. The powerful Mexican music, Fallaste Corazón from which the film takes its title, No Volveré by Chavela Vargas or La Llorona by Fela Dominguez set the tone of the story as a work in which tragedy, fiction and reality are intertwined with the visual power and the mastery of Carlos Saura.
