Oaxacalifornia: el retorno

Hace veinticinco años, la directora mexicana de origen inglés Trisha Ziff produjo su primer documental sobre la familia Mejía mientras navegaban por su nueva realidad como inmigrantes recién llegados a los Estados Unidos. Continuando donde terminó la película de 1994, conocemos a la tercera generación de Mejías, ahora adolescentes estadounidenses de segunda generación, mientras exploran lo que significa ser mexicano y estadounidense en este país. Filmada en ambos lados de la frontera, Oaxacalifornia, El Retorno,  ilustra convincentemente las formas en que las identidades multigeneracionales cambian y adquieren nuevos significados dentro de una sola familia para permitir que sus miembros se adapten sin problemas a una realidad bicultural. Desafiando narrativas más antiguas que definían la experiencia migratoria de personas, como los abuelos de Mejía atrapados entre dos mundos, o siendo ni de aquí ni de allá, los nietos exploran y reclaman sus identidades tanto de aquí como de allá (de aquí y de allá).

La crónica de tres generaciones de una familia estadounidense, Oaxacalifornia, El Retorno,  nos recuerda los matices de pertenencia y otredad que conforman el tejido de los Estados Unidos convirtiéndose en una epopeya conmovedora de la vida cotidiana de la era moderna.

Twenty-five years ago, English-born Mexican director Trisha Ziff produced her first documentary about the Mejía family as they navigated their new reality as recently arrived immigrants to the United States. Picking up where the 1994 film left off, we meet the third generation of Mejías, now second-generation American teenagers, as they navigate what it means to be both Mexican and American in the United States. Shot on both sides of the border, Oaxacalifornia: The Return compellingly illustrates the ways in which multigenerational identities shift and take on new meanings within a single family to allow its members to seamlessly adapt to a bicultural reality. Challenging older narratives that defined the migrant experience of those like the Mejía grandparents as one stuck between two worlds, or being “ni de aquí ni de allá” (neither here nor there), the grandchildren explore and reclaim their identities as being both de aquí y de allá (from here and there). Chronicling three generations of one American family, Oaxacalifornia: The Return reminds us of the nuances of both belonging and otherness that make up the fabric of this nation and crescendos to become a moving epic of everyday life for the modern age.
